breakthrough 2019 Storyline
John Smith (Ravis) is a 14-year-old Guatemalan boy raised by his adoptive parents, Brian (Lucas) and Joyce Smith (Metz) in Lake St. Louis, Missouri. Although she is loving and supportive, John struggles with feelings of abandonment to his birth parents and is rebellious against his parents and teachers.
At school, John’s class is assigned to give a presentation about his family background. On the day of his submission, John admitted that he had not made the assignment. His basketball coach, who promised him a starting position, has warned John that if he gets a failing grade, he will be benched. John later gave a half-hearted presentation, saying that everyone already knew he was adopted and did not know much about his true background.
Later, John and his friend Josh and Reger go to a frozen lake, ignoring the neighbor’s warning. The resident calls the police, and the three boys fall off the ice. Josh and Roger manage to swim to the surface and are rescued by first responders. Two rescue personnel sank but could not find John. When they were about to lose, one of the rescuers, Tommy Shine (Calter), heard a voice and asked him to return. Thinking he is his chief, he tries again and manages to raise his soul.
Without a pulse or breath, John was taken to a local hospital, where an emergency team bravely worked to save his life. After John fails to register for the pulse, the attending physician gives Dr. Sterner Joyce a chance to say goodbye. A crying Joyce enters her son in his arms and pleads with the Holy Spirit not to allow the soul to die, at which point a faint pulse registers. Dr. Sterner referred to Dr. Garrett (Herbert) as a specialist in John’s case and recommended that John be transported to a well-equipped hospital.
After John’s transfer and medically induced coma, Garrett warns his parents that he has little hope for John’s recovery and that if he wants to go through it, he may be in a state of fury. lives in. Jason Noble (Grace), the new liberal pastor of the family with whom Joyce often clashes, goes to the hospital, and Joyce is slowly warming up. Like Joyce, they see John’s progress as a divine intervention. John shows some signs of consciousness: He is able to hear Joyce and Noble respond and squeeze in his hand, and his eyes gather as a tear trick and pray for his recovery.
Joyce turned John’s possible rehab into a madness, harassing her health care professionals and alienating those around her, including her husband. In an exciting moment, Joyce tells Brian that if he doesn’t have John, John will die. After a short and traumatic retaliation, Brian was stormed. Knowing she can’t control John’s results, Joyce goes back to praying on the roof of the hospital, apologizing to God and keeping her custom. It starts snowing, which he thinks is the answer. He and Brian meet Garrett, who tells them that the drugs he is giving are poisonous to John’s system and may be doing more harm than good. Joyce, who was adamant on saving lives at all costs, advised her to stop treatment and remove her from the coma, saying she was ready for whatever fate she brought. Garrett agrees.
John is alive again and slowly regains consciousness, recovers his accident. He listens to his mother’s voice and opens his eyes with full intellectual ability. A few days later, he was discharged from the hospital and returned to school.
John’s return, though welcomed by many, faces some resentment from others, who ask why John was rescued while his own loved ones died. It weighs on John’s mind, and he comes back to the lake where he sees Tommy Shine and thanks to him for saving his life. Tommy admitted that he did not believe in God until the long moments following John’s accident and that he had dragged John out of the water.
John reconciled his survival with a new sense of purpose in his life and redefined his relationships with the people he had become a stranger to. An address shows that John is pursuing a career in ministry after graduating from high school.
